Young Women
Why are so many young women reluctant to label themselves as feminists?
Very few of the young women I know view themselves as feminists. Yet they believe in equal pay for equal work; the right to an education, employment etc; the right to vote; the right to an abortion; the right to live a life free from domestic violence etc; in short the equality between men and women. This is the very definition of feminism. Why are so many young women reluctant to label themselves as such?
Women in my generation (post-1980) were being raised RIGHT after the backlash to feminism started, which was around the tail end of the 70's.
There's a lot of truth to what the poster above me said about young women not realizing that they wouldn't have always had it as good as they do now. They take their professional, financial. and sexual autonomy for granted, whereas our mothers and grandmothers had to fight tooth and nail to simply get women on the MAP when it comes to world influence.
I have had to have this conversation with most of my friends when they've proudly stated "I'm no feminist, BUT--" before spouting off some feminist platitude. It's ridiculous how many girls feel they have to tiptoe around this label just because some grumpy conservatives decided to get all butt-hurt about it and scream "FAT UGLY LESBIAN LOL" at every woman who dares call herself The F-Word. Calling someone a dyke has proven to be an incredibly powerful silencing tactic, but ehhh, I'm hardly impressed. Traditionalists can go ahead and call me a lesbian all they want, and I'm just going to keep laughing how it is 1.) not true, and 2.) it's the only hand they've got left to play.
