How many eggs does a 21 year old woman have left in her ovaries if she's been menstruating almost every month since she was 11 years old?

Women are born with about a million eggs - far more than they'd ever need - and the number of eggs diminishes throughout her life. (Although technically these are oocytes or "egg folicles," not mature eggs). So based on that single piece of evidence, it used to be the "common knowledge" that women were incapable of creating eggs, and they just released them until she "ran out" or they "went bad."

But new research suggests that the eggs might be being generated in the ovaries; there's a 2009 Chinese study that reached this conclusion, for example. The root cause of menopause might well be cellular senescence, not the depletion of non-renewable cells.

At any rate, the answer to your question is that, at age 21, a woman has about 350,000 "eggs" (actually, cells that are capable of becoming eggs), and the number of those cells tends to decline by about 1,000 a month, suggesting that you have about 25-30 years of fertility left.
