could anybody explain this line for me.. what i don't get is " i had a prayer" .. is he saying it out loud.. or did he have a prayer somewhere in a book or what???

I had a prayer that was as obvious and real as that flower. The scene and season the speaker is describing is a type of nativity. All the allusions are there as well as the wonderment of childhood, especially for those soaked in christianity that this story is real, and then look, for a six year old it is a prayer as real as a white rose and with the Virgin,
