How to photograph a wedding couple with fireworks in background?

I've been asked to photograph a wedding where they will let of fireworks behind the couple to photograph. This isn't something I have a lot of opportunity to try out. I've explained to them that this is a first for me so not to expect too much but I would like to try my best. What lens would be best, tripod, etc...

I wish you had told us what camera you have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I assume you have a DSLR or at the very least a decent bridge camera, right? You won't get any acceptable results with a tiny P&S.

You certainly need a tripod.

Use the night scene setting, which gives you a certain amount of flash for the couple, but extends the exposure to let in ambient light (in this case, the fireworks).

You'll need an off camera flash with a softbox, or a shoot trough umbrella. At the very minimum, you need a good diffuser on your flash.

Practice with someone at your home, putting them outside in front of a house (which has some lights on) in the dark, so you get all the settings right and you know what to expect.
