What was the main function of Piazza San Marco in Ancient Rome?
Piazza San Marco did not exist during the time of ancient Rome. The Roman empire ceased to exist around 500 AD and as the previous person said Piazza San Marco dates to the 800s.
Piazzas in general in Italy are gathering places for festivals, street markets, ceremonies, etc. and this has been true ever since the times of the ancient Roman Empire.
