Was it custom in the old days for husband and wife to sleep in separate beds in the same room?
In the movie A Christmas Story, when Ralphie goes into his parents' room, there are two beds. The story takes place in 1940. Was this normal back then? What changed over the years?
In those days, the largest bed couples could afford would be a double. No kings or queens, so little room for movement, so twin beds were more comfortable and cost no more than a double. Often, they would be pushed together to form one bed, but custom blankets had to be created. Even with the blankets, early on this created some problems, with the beds suddenly slipping and one or both people ending up on the floor. Been there, done that.
