Louis XIV had a very long reign, from about 1650 til 1714. He 1) consolidated French military and political dominance in Europe that last til the Franco-Prussian War of 1870; 2) increased the power of the national government in Paris over the whole country, providing the model for the modern (overly?) centralized European state; 3) established French cultural hegemony in Europe through his court at Versailles, standardization of the French language, founding of the French Academy etc.; 4) helped stimulate modern state economic policy and thinking by employing important contributor to it like his minister Colbert. In the short run he also stimulated frequent warfare across Europe as his neighbors and rivals acted to reign in his territorial and dynastic ambitions after he made France the most powerful state on the continent.
