Calculating the return of an echo?
You are sitting on a rock opposite the palisades on a lake. If it is a half mile across the lake, how long will it take an echo to return? Assume sound is traveling at 240 m/s.
I think the equation is distance=speed * time but am not sure how to plug in the numbers...
any help is appreciated, thanks!
Make sure you convert miles to meters for this problem
since the sound must travel the .5 miles twice we will call it one mile to save time
there are roughly 1609.3 meters to a mile
now use you relation for distance, time and speed
s=d/t
solve for t
t=d/s
plug in your values
t=1609.3m/240m/s
t=6.7s
