When and where is the title 'Crown Prince/ss' used for the person next in line for the throne?
Say there is a Queen with two sons. Is the first son given the title of 'Crown Prince' at birth? And is his younger brother just 'Prince' unless something happens to the Crown Prince before he produces an heir?
In what countries is this used?
Correct in all respects. Crown Prince is the title of the heir apparent to the throne in most monarchies. The UK is an exception where that title isn't used.
A little twist on this - the title can only be used for an heir apparent, meaning one who definitely is the heir and cannot be displaced. If the law of succession is that males come before females, then in a family of only daughters, the eldest one is the next in line to the throne but there is always a possibility that she can be pushed aside by the birth of a brother. This is why Queen Elizabeth II, when she was a Princess, was only ever heir presumptive and not heir apparent, and is only Queen because she had no brothers. So the only time you can have a Crown Princess is in a country where there is no male preference. A few European monarchies have changed the law to allow this, but the only one where it makes any difference because the eldest child of the current reigning monarch is female is Sweden. That makes their Crown Princess Victoria the only Crown Princess in the world.
