To be a successful composer, is it necessary to be a professional pianist?
Or maybe the question is better phrased what is necessary to be successful Compsa music? In absolute terms the essential skills. Is grade 8 theory and ABRSM / AMEB (Australian system) sufficient basic education for one to focus only on the composition of learning?
it all depends on the substance you call. if you compose choral works, not at all. be a professional pianist can even be an obstacle because it srew your linear thinking and singing. same for the drum compositions. You gotta know the piano if you lead permanently in need. that means you must of course know how to play a fugue by Bach and a Chopin prelude, if you wouldnt even get a price for it. the time when composers were identical with the outstanding pianists and vice versa (Liszt, for example) are over. the most important skills base for a composer is a thorough understanding of music history and techniques of the Notre Dame modern schools of all kinds and lots of originality.
